Since 2001 Kōkako has been committed to bringing the best selection of Fairtrade organically grown specialty coffees to our network of cafe and hospitality customers, businesses and people at home across Aotearoa. Our coffee, cold brew and drinking chocolate are all certified organic through BioGro New Zealand.
Our roasting philosophy is centred around a deep respect for coffee, those who grow it and our environment. Successful roasting means controlling as many parameters as possible and to enable this we roast on a German-made 25kg Probat Probatone Coffee Roaster matched to industry-leading advanced roast-profiling software, Cropster, from Austria. Each roast is carefully profiled and cupped rigorously before being made available to you.
We buy from specific origins that we have found to be reliable and where the flavour profile matches our expectation for a consistently well-rounded quality cup of coffee. We have been roasting coffee for over almost two decades and it is with this experience and knowledge that we are able to produce exemplary coffee blends and single origin coffees suitable for both espresso and filter brewing methods.
While our Mount Eden roastery is primarily a production site for wholesale customers, you're always welcome to pop in during weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m to grab some beans for home, paper filters or whatever you need for your home coffee setup. We always have a fresh pot of filter coffee available so ask us what’s available when you visit! You’ll find us at 9 Charles St, Mount Eden, Auckland 1024.
Every other month we host Tasty Tuesdays — our cupping events which are open to the public where our roastery team walks you through our seasonal coffee offering.
It's nice to know there are other people out there who care as much as we do. Our Econic® compostable packaging was purpose-designed by Convex in Hamilton (yes! NZ owned and operated) to allow us and other likeminded businesses to reduce our impact on the environment, while still retaining the same level of functionality and food safety provided by traditional plastic films. Our bags are made from three different compostable films (that are laminated together to lock in the freshness, taste and flavour) derived from sustainably-produced wood pulp and GM-free corn sources. Each film has been certified to the European and American compostability standards (EN 13432 and ASTM6400).
It's important to note that our bags break down fastest when disposed of in a composting environment containing heat, water, oxygen soil and micro-organisms - the best place to currently find this ideal environment in NZ is with a commercial composter like We Compost, but our bags will still break down in a home compost system - it just takes a bit longer.
After emptying your bag of beans or grinds into an airtight container, remove the one-way valve on the back of the pack and place it into your regular landfill waste bin.
Then, cut or rip open the bag to flatten it out completely. The more surface area the better, this helps the bags break down faster - so chop it up as small as you can.
Once the bag is in tiny pieces mix it into your composting system of choice - at the Kōkako Roastery the majority of our compost is collect by We Compost but we also use two Hungry Bins for staff lunch food waste and some of our team bring in their green waste from home!
